Why preparation matters
Some blood tests need fasting; others don't. A little preparation makes results more accurate and your visit faster.
The night before
- Fasting tests (cholesterol, glucose, comprehensive metabolic panel): no food or drinks other than water for 8–12 hours.
- Water is fine — drink it freely. Hydrated veins are easier to find.
- Medications — take as normal unless your doctor said otherwise. If unsure, call us.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before any lipid test.
The morning of
- Wear a short-sleeve top or one with sleeves that roll up easily.
- Bring your health card, photo ID, and any requisition form.
- Have a small snack and water ready to enjoy right after.
During the draw
Let the nurse know if you feel light-headed, have ever fainted at blood draws, or prefer to lie down. We will accommodate.
After the draw
- Keep the bandage on for 30 minutes.
- Avoid heavy lifting with that arm for a few hours.
- A small bruise is normal — it fades in a few days.
When you'll hear back
Most results return in 1–3 business days. We will call if anything needs urgent attention. Otherwise, your physician will discuss results at your next visit.
